First Contact Day (April 5, 2063)

On April 5, 2063, Vulcans make first contact with humans near Bozeman, Montana. This encountered was triggered by the first warp flight, achieved by Zefram Cochran. 

For such a pivotal event, First Contact Day isn't discussed much in the Trek universe.  The movie Star Trek: First Contact and Voyager: Homestead (S7:E23) are almost the only references.  See Memory Alpha for more information.

How to Commemorate:

• Give children the day off from school (as Captain Janeway observed it)
• Eat cheese pierogies (Cochran's favorite food)
• Listen to rock and roll (Cochran's favorite music), preferably on a juke box
• Say "Live long and prosper" as a casual salutation

Drive really fast (because ...warp drive!)

Winston Smith begins to keep a diary. (4 April 1984)

In 1984 by George Orwell, the action begins when the main character begins a diary on April 4, 1984. From there we get a look at the future.

How to Commemorate:

• Start a diary.
• Have conversations using Newspeak.
• For God's sake, don't dust anything!  (Because it's a symbol, you know...)

Deadpool empowers Vanessa (International Women's Day, March 8)

Our favorite calendar couple features Wade Wilson (soon-to-become Deadpool) and his lady-love Vanessa Carlysle. They “celebrate” holidays throughout the year in what is almost unanimously endorsed at Today in Fiction HQ as one of the hottest montages in film. I mean, seriously, Ryan Reynolds and Morena Baccarin. Is there even a hotter couple out there?

 
Anyway, International Women’s Dayis a totally legit and meaningful observance. Please honor women and learn to respect us. And maybe also watch this movie.

• Interview a female relative about her experiences as a woman.
• Use a strap-on.
