It's not Christmas until you "call me Ishmael."

The Pequod leaves New Bedford harbor on Christmas Day for a three-year voyage in search of "Moby-Dick, or The Whale." The original Great American novel, by Herman Melville, was published in November of 1851.

Footnote: Sci-Fi great Ray Bradbury wrote the screenplay for the classic film. Pick up his S is for Space short story collection, because, let's face it, you'll actually finish one of those stories.

How to Commemorate:

  • Have some whale blubber. Try your local butcher.  (Just don't accuse your girlfriend of having any.)
  • Introduce yourself as Ishmael all day.
  • Watch the classic Tom and Jerry cartoon "Dicky Moe."
